Rainbow Mountain, Whistler backcountry

tobias c. van Veen, b. 1978, is currently hiding out in Whistler & observing the ravages of the world while immersing himself in the snow and rock of BC’s Coast mountains. Otherwise known as a renegade theorist and a turntablist practitioner of the technology arts, tobias is adept with decks and words, ups and downs, media and the arts, cracks and crevasses.

In Whistler, tobias is social media and design consultant for FairyPunk Studio, working with a variety of international clients in editorial, user experience, and social media. He is also Sea-to-Sky & BC Sales Representative for DPS Skis.

As a researcher in media arts, tobias has written for WIRE, Discorder, Leonardo Music Journal, e|i, Grooves, CAPITAL, FUSE, StylusMagazine.com, DustedMagazine.com and other outlets. He is Managing Editor of Dancecult: Journal for Electronic Dance Music Culture and the Competition Columnist to SKI Canada magazine.

Tobias’ next publication, the edited volume Afrofuturism: Interstellar Transmissions from Remix Culture, is forthcoming from Wayne State University Press.

In the last throes of a doctorate in Philosophy and Communication Studies at McGill University, tobias still manages to get in around 70 days a year (ask for a swig of absynthe martini from the sacred flask).
