Robin O’Neill Wins 2012 Deep Winter Photo Challenge

I believe congratulations are in order to Robin O’Neill, who won this year’s Deep Winter Photo Challenge (sponsored by good ol’ Arc’Teryx). Robin, who came in second in the 2011 Challenge to Blake Jorgenson, returned to scoop both the 2011 Deep Summer Challenge and now the deep winter (which was the sunniest on record—quite the contrast to last year’s neck-deep snowfall).

Robin’s slideshow title, Lifers, reflects upon a cast of athletes both in their prime and in their primed, so to speak. A capable (if not incomparable) cast of young’uns like James Heim, Eric Hjorleifson, Pat Bougie, and Matty Richard are contrasted with legendary mountaineers and ski alpinists Werner Himmelsbach, Karl Ricker and Shore trail builder and DPS Maven Peter Morin (who is shown sporting his Wailer 105 Pures). It’s an intriguing concept that goes far beyond the usual domain of action-sports photography, reminding the younger generation, perhaps, that they stand on the shoulders of giants. Here’s Robin’s first-place winning 2011 Deep Summer slideshow — enjoy!
